The city clung on afterward, but following an earthquake in the second half of the 8th century, it finally succumbed to the sea and lay lost beneath the waves for the next 1,200 years.
What makes this the definitive entry on this list is the sheer scale of what remains undiscovered. Archaeologists believe only 5% of the city has been excavated so far, meaning the most important ancient Egyptian harbor most people have never heard of is still, quite literally, mostly a mystery.
