A new study from Eötvös Loránd University suggests that dogs may understand natural human speech more effectively than Augmentative Interspecies Communication (AIC) buttons, which have gained popularity on social media. Researchers tested how dogs responded to familiar verbal cues using direct human speech, loudspeaker recordings, and AIC buttons, revealing significant differences in comprehension.
How Dogs Respond to Different Communication Methods

Dogs performed best when hearing direct human speech, responding correctly nearly one hundred percent of the time. Their success rate dropped to seventy percent when listening to loudspeaker recordings and fell sharply to thirty percent when using AIC buttons. Scientists found that sound degradation in AIC buttons significantly affected dogs’ ability to recognize words, making them less reliable for communication.
Gifted Word-Learner Dogs and Recorded Speech
The study also examined Gifted Word-Learner dogs, known for their ability to learn toy names rapidly. These dogs were trained using recorded toy names played through loudspeakers instead of direct speech. After two weeks, they successfully identified toys based on the recordings, though their accuracy was slightly higher when hearing the names spoken directly by their owners.
Implications for Canine Communication
Researchers concluded that while dogs can recognize recorded speech, audio quality plays a crucial role in their ability to understand words. The findings suggest that natural human interaction remains the most effective way to communicate with dogs, rather than relying on trending AIC buttons. This research aligns with previous studies showing that dogs process speech in ways similar to humans, favoring direct verbal interaction over artificial communication tools.
Conclusion

The study highlights the importance of maintaining natural communication with dogs, reinforcing the idea that direct speech is the most effective way to engage with them. As interest in canine communication grows, researchers continue to explore how dogs interpret human language, offering insights into their cognitive abilities and strengthening the bond between humans and their pets.
