A 500-year-old handwritten book filled with looping, unrecognizable script and illustrations of unidentifiable plants has defeated every codebreaker who’s ever attempted to crack it, including the team that broke Japan’s WWII “Code Purple.”
Cryptologists have been trying to figure it out since 1912, and even William and Elizabeth Friedman, two of the preeminent codebreakers of their era, spent decades studying it and became convinced it was an invented language. Radiocarbon dating places the vellum to the early 15th century, ruling out several popular theories about its origin.
